PURPOSE AND SUMMARY
Under general supervision weld metal components with brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products such as machine parts, plant equipment, snow plow equipment, hot mix plan equipment, motors, and generators. Repair, mount, dismount, and balance tires. Perform multi process welding, brazing, soldering and forming of various metal and their alloys. Perform skilled work in the preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of equipment.
Considerable knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices used in welding, brazing and cutting. Working knowledge of the practice of various metals and the hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Performs procedures using plasma, carbon arc, oxyacetylene process. Performs welding procedures using the metal core process, and performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding. Performs fabrication on a lathe, milling machine, boring bar, radial arm drill press and a press. Ability to fabricate parts and equipment, with or without plans or specifications. Build any specialty tools or equipment needed in the department. Working knowledge of welding law and high carbon steels, cast iron, stainless steel and aluminum. Knowledge of hardfacing practices and techniques and the hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to operate mobile or stationary equipment that is being repaired in order to determine if repairs have been completed. Mounts and dismounts snow plow equipment, including sanders on vehicles. Repairs, mounts, dismount, balance tires, retract and refill fluid in tires. Keep accurate tire installation log. Maintain accurate inventory of tires and tubes. Work with vendors for reordering, recapping of tires and repainting rims. Ability to work with service truck and equipment. Ability to repair hydraulic fittings and rams, performs electrical trouble shooting and repairs. Ability to operate shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas tringsten arc metal machines. Ability to operate oxy-acetylene welding, brazing, and cutting equipment, flux core arc, submerged arc process, air carbon arc gauging and cutting equipment. Use of horizontal and vertical band saws and chop saws. Ability to straighten and reform metal as needed. Ability to weld and fabricate within confined spaces while following combined space safety rules. Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy vehicles, construction equipment and maintenance equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance, repair or replacement work. Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical and hydraulic problems, parts manuals and wiring schematics. Ability to perform sandblasting operations and perform facility maintenance. Capable of driving and operating trucks equipped with plow, wing and sander and also be capable of operating any other equipment required to maintain the section. Winter maintenance may include but is not limited to removing snow with plows and sands/salts icy roads, and installs, repairs or replace snow fence. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent; certified in fabrication and/or have experience equivalent to five years in the welding and metals trade. Ability to pass a written test with a score of 70% or more, and the ability to pass a practical test administered and scored by a qualified third party. Good physical condition, with ability to frequently lift and/or carry items weighing 50 pounds and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds, and be capable of climbing for maintenance activities. A combination of extended periods of standing and/or sitting postures may be required. Valid commercial driver’s license, Class A, B, C, D – ability to obtain endorsement N. Ability to work from oral or written instructions, blueprints, sketches and prints.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in a shed and outdoor settings, including but not limited to construction sites. Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds, but, must be capable of lifting 100 pounds. A combination of sitting and standing postures may be required, use of hands, ability to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required for this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to regularly work five eight hour days and/or four ten hour days and the ability to adapt to working non-standard work hours, including weekends, late evenings, early mornings and holidays. Ability to work in an environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors and non-toxic fumes. Ability to work in an environment with exposure to adverse temperature and/or humidity extremes.
