The Sheboygan County Water Safety Team is responsible for patrolling the water ways of Sheboygan County. The patrol year typically runs from mid May until the end of September. Deputies assigned to the Water Safety Team usually patrol the waterways with a 16 foot Smokercraft Boat or a 27 foot Safe Boat WAC (Walk-Around-Cabin). Occasionally the deputies will also patrol and watch the waterways from their assigned squad. Members of the patrol unit will receive training from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and also the United States Coast Guard - Station Sheboygan.
The team will enforce boating regulations under Chapter 30 of the Wisconsin State Statutes. When officers observe a violation, they will also perform an inspection of the boat or personal watercraft (PWC) to make sure all the necessary safety equipment is in order. There is also members of the unit that are certified to teach the DNR boat safety course. The course typically runs in spring time and is 12 hours long.
