Public Health is a lead agency for directing and coordinating health and medical responses during emergencies and disasters within the county by working closely with Red Cross, Salvation Army, United Way, area hospitals, medical providers, and first responders (emergency medical services, fire/rescue, emergency management, and law enforcement) to ensure emergency/disaster response plans are coordinated and practiced.

Public health services during emergencies and disasters include:
• Disease control
• Food and water safety
• Radiological and biological response
• Providing public health information
• Assisting in the coordination of mass casualty treatment in partnership with EMS and hospitals.
