Sheboygan County - Winter Operation Information
Snowplow Safety:
- Snowplows typically travel at 25-35 mph, which in many cases is significantly slower than the posted speeds. The driver's field of vision is also severely restricted.
- It is illegal (s.346.915, Wis. Stats.) to follow a snowplow closer than 200 feet upon any highway having a posted speed limit of more than 35 mph if the snowplow is engaged in snow and ice removal.
- It is legal to pass a snowplow but care should be taken when attempting this maneuver because it's often difficult to see past the snowplow because of the snow cloud. Also the snowplow's wing blade can extend up to 10 feet beyond the width of the truck. Many snowplow wing blades are hit each season by vehicles attempting to pass the snowplow.
- Between 1984-2004 there were 17 snowplows involved in fatal crashes in Wisconsin. (Snowplow crash information has not been gathered since 2004.)
Why are we spraying water on the roadway on a perfectly clear day? We are actually spraying a liquid salt solution on the roadway that will help keep snow and ice from bonding to the pavement. Spraying a salt solution on the roadway is similar to spraying a frying pan with oil to keep food from sticking to the bottom of the pan. The salt solution acts as a barrier so that the snow and ice won't form a strong bond to the pavement. Studies show that under extremely cold conditions ice frozen to concrete has a stronger bond than concrete alone. In many locations we also spray the salt solution on bridge decks the afternoon before a predicted frost. The early application of the salt solution helps prevent frost from forming on bridge decks throughout the night.
Mailboxes: Snow and wind keeps snow plow truck drivers very busy in the winter while they try to keep the roads clear and safe for everyone to drive on. If the plow truck driver hits your mailbox, the Sheboygan County Highway Department will either install your old one back on or if damaged, will replace the broken one with a standard, black mailbox that is the most durable in the harsh winter conditions. If a pile of snow is pushed into your mailbox by a plow truck and it breaks, then the owner is responsible for replacing it. It is best to check your mailbox before the season to check the post and box to make sure it is in sturdy condition and complies with the US Post Office's requirements. US Post Office Website If your mailbox was hit by a plow, please call 920-459-3822 and leave a message with your name, phone number and address.
